Saturday Nov. 6th was not my normal day. I went for my usual training session at half point. It was low tide ,small but clean with no one out , I had some fun little waves and suddenly had a urdge to pull in to this little left hand wedge coming at me. Before I knew it, I was speeding rapidly towards the ocean floor a few feet below. I tried to brace for impact and ended up blasting in to the reef with my back. I knew I was messed up as soon as I hit. I was hoping it was just the wind knocked out of me but as I got my breath back I knew something was amiss. I grabbed on to my board and got pushed to shore. I had a hard time walking up the beach and could barely stand back up or take my fins off. A nice random sunbather had to help me carry my gear to the lifeguard tower where I discussed the situation with my friends who were on duty. Skipp was luckily there and he was nice enough to drive me to the emergency room at Queens Medical Center. Thanks Bro. After a few hours waiting around with my wife and doing all sorts of tests and x rays CT scans ect. I was diagnosed with a fractured 11th rib and fractured L1 and L2 transverse process vertebreas. I was lucky I could walk and the injury was not worse but was still very upset that it could put me out of the water for about 4-8 weeks.
So the next few days were spent in bed on pain medication barely moving. My wife has been so helpful in making me meals and getting me supplements and helping me work on my injuries. I would not be recovering as fast if it were not for her help. Thanks babe
. The first week was rough, with lots of TV and sleeping. The shows Dexter, Weeds and Californication have been helping occupy my time. Lately I have been doing lots of rehab work stretching and starting some light work outs and I am even swimming now. It is hard some times painful work but I am seeing improvement every day and am optimistic for a quick recovery. I visit the Doctor on Dec 3rd and will find out if the bones are healed and if I can resume my normal surfing activities. Hopefully I am able to make the invitational Fronton contest starting December 10-21st. Thats my goal.
I want to thank every one for their well wishes and notes. They are great.
I will keep you updated on my progress.

Heal quick Jeff!!
Inspiring story get well soon!!. I myself am studying my degree in Business and an older student at 37. Also been Bodyboarding for over 20 years when the sport took off really.
I live on the North coast Cornwall England with my wife Loraine and two girls and I am forever encouraging them to surf more. Anyway from one end of the globe to another, best wishes to yourself and your family. Ps thoroughly enjoy your Bodyboarding stories and good look with Uni.
So glad you were not hurt permanently Jeff! I suffered a broken neck in 1996, fractured L6 and L7. I was down for 9 months, the ER said that out of 6 people who came in with those type injuries only two of us had walked out and not rolled out in a wheel chair. I picked sand out of my scalp for 3 months. Scared the hell out of me, I still have no feeling in three fingers on my left hand and behind my arm.
Didn’t surf for many years, but I’m back at it now. Unfortunately it is always in the back of my mind.
Get better Jeff!!!!
hope you get better soon Jeff… cheers !!
pray god hubb then you’ll be ok very soon as you imagine
K BUENO K NO FUE UNA LESION MAS DURA Y LO PEOR ES LA RECUPERACION ESO SI K DUELE SUERTE Y BUEN KARMA
Hope the back feels better already. (Just like everyone else in the world), I’m not nearly as skilled as you, but as a 38 year old, I’ve been doing it just as long, resulting in more than my share of rib and back and neck injuries.
Here’s my advice.
Make the rest of your body stronger to protect it.
Don’t overdo the stretching, lite stretching only. Ribs will heal but can be sore for years. If it hurts to lie on the board, they make those compression shirts that you can inflate a little bit on the area where you are hurt, many guys have successfully used them when coming back from broken ribs.
Hubb,
Get well soon! The World wants to see you flying at Fronton
All the best from Portugal,
David
Hope you get well very soon Jeff, El Fronton without you isn’t perfect, get better son please, cheers mate.
Get well dude. Your one of the most exciting bodyboarders to watch so It will be insane if you could showcase some massive boosts to the world on Red Bull tv. If not don’t worry I am sure Winnie and that will do bodyboarding justice and you can just show the world next year at what will be a bigger and better contest. PS You should get into Entourage it is the best show.
